If you have not yet completed your Census, you might be getting a knock on your door over the next few weeks from a Census Worker.

The Census Bureau announced in a statement on August 3 that field data collection, as well as self-response to the 2020 Census, will be concluded on September 30, leaving 42 days for a complete, accurate count to be collected.

Getting a complete count is necessary for ensuring that our state gets proper federal funding for our roads, schools, emergency services, as well as funding for human services programs like unemployment, SNAP, Head Start, TANF, and WIC. Undercounts in the Census can lead to redistricting and less representation in local government.

The Decennial Census hasn’t gone to plan as it has in the past, greatly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the CDC  and the Census Bureau have worked together to create guidelines to ensure the safety of both Census workers and Delawareans in order to move forward with data collection.

Delaware’s current self-response average for the Census is at 61.3%, with the city of Wilmington reporting at 51.5%. In 2010, Wilmington’s overall response was 62.3%.

Participation in the Census is a very simple, yet important part of our democracy. It takes 10 minutes to complete the survey, and those 10 minutes help shape our state for the next decade!

While Census Workers are now out in the field, you can still respond to the Census online, or by phone at 1-844-330-2020.
