Union Street recently got the major makeover we’ve been hearing about for years! In an article posted by Technical.ly Delaware; The Urban Bike Project of Wilmington, West Side Grows Together, Delaware Department of Transportation, WILMAPCO, and The City of Wilmington all worked together to come up with a new traffic pattern which includes a new bike lane as well as the additional parking spots we all need!

I moved to Union Street because it was a little cheaper than Trolley Square but still had a nightlife. I’m hoping the improvement to parking will make the nightlife even livelier! I’m for anything that’s an improvement to my street! We’ve been hearing that this could happen for a while so it’s awesome that it did!” -Rich Derkey, Union Street Resident and local musician of “Eastern Elk”

Urban Mobility is important in growing cities like Wilmington. It allows safe travel for those on bikes to safely share the road with cars. Supporting this cause encourages people to live healthier, adds independence to those who do not have cars, and cuts down on fossil fuel emissions.

The group has been working on this project for a few years and on October 30th the hard work paid off and the re-striping began! Come celebrate Union Street’s new look this Saturday, November 18th with a bike parade! The fun begins at 2pm, it’s free with no registration needed. Party starts with an award ceremony, a bike parade down Union, special promotions at your fave spots, and FREE bike tune-ups! For more info click here.
