#PeopleOfWilmDE: Rene Ayala

Rene Ayala is the co-owner and chef of El Toro Cantina, and is this week’s #PeopleOfWilmDE! Read his story below.

“I grew up in LA and my parents were offered better opportunities in Delaware so we moved. Leaving everyone I knew and moving at 13 years old was tough but in the end, it was the best thing my parents could have done for me. I’ve been here ever since!

My proudest moment as a Wilmingtonian was when we first opened El Toro Cantina! The Mayor came for our opening day and celebrated that moment with us. We felt supported by our city, and it was a great feeling.

My favorite attraction in Wilmington was the Ice Skating Rink on The Riverfront. I love ice skating because it reminds me of when I played hockey back in LA. While I don’t really get anytime off on the weekends,  when I do take time off, my ideal night out begins with my favorite person, my wife. We’d start at Torbert Street Social for their awesome unique drinks, then Bardea Steak because I’ve heard good reviews, then check out the Quoin Hotel for the deck sky view to end the night.

I continue to choose Wilmington because it has a little of everything!  The city grows on you. A few blocks this way you have a different vibe from a few blocks that way, but somehow it all works. It’s now my city and I love creating good food for my city!

I am very excited about how downtown Wilmington has added so many new restaurants to the city and how much the Riverfront has grown. There’s so much more to do now! I would love to see more resources for our youth in the city. More afterschool activities or a safe spot for teens to be able to play sports, do homework, hang out, and maybe even be able to get food without thinking about money.

My advice to Wilmingtonians? Support local restaurants like El Toro Cantina! We are a Wilmington must-try, with an awesome Taco Tuesday, Wednesday Wine special, Thursday Margarita special, and much more!”
