Kristina Ruggerio is the Owner of Beauty Bar & BBKR Med Spa. She is this week’s #PeopleofWilmDE. Read her story below.
I have lived in Wilmington my entire life as I was a lifer at Ursuline Academy, go Raiders! Also, I’ve owned my building which is now Beauty Bar & BBKR Med Spa, on Augustine Cut off for almost 5 years now!
I was born and raised in Wilmington, K-12 at UA Academy. I knew I wanted to pursue the beauty industry so I studied aesthetics at Dawn Training Center straight out of HS. During an interim, I worked as a receptionist at Lexus of Wilmington then landed my first job as a makeup artist for a good 6 years. I eventually went off on my own to work at Michael Christopher‘s at his original iconic Pennsylvania Ave. location, started my own cosmetics line, Kristina Ruggerio Cosmetics, and began specializing in Bridal Makeup at 150 weddings. In 2019, I purchased the 1702 Augustine Cut Off building with my husband, Mark Borsello, and we started Beauty Bar By Kristina Ruggerio. We opened 6 months before Covid hit after renovating the entire building, but somehow made it through and even launched our Med Spa in April of 2023; after a partnership with Dr. Laura Dougherty with Dougherty Dental Solutions. It has been a fun ride so far and we look very much forward to continuing to grow in the beauty industry!
My perfect day in Wilmington starts off with an afternoon coffee/pick me up at Brew Haha. We love the trolley Brew! As the evening rolls in, and we’re feeling fancy, we head over to La Fia for their delightful wine selection and incredible food. For a more relaxed night, Pizza Metro has a great atmosphere and the pizza is delicious, they have a cute little bar too!
An event that I always love is the Brandywine Arts Festival. It’s so much fun to see local artisans and their yummy foods, beautiful jewelry and unique art. It’s great fun for adults, kids and animals, how can you go wrong?!
A few fun facts about me would be:
- Winter is *by far* my favorite season and has been my whole life!
- I can’t kill bugs. I will carry bugs out of my home before I kill them.
- I love a good adventure. I’d love to have an RV one day to travel the country!
Delaware is a small wonder, professionally it’s been great to connect with people where everyone knows everyone. Depending on the situation, that can be good or bad but in my case, it’s been great! For example when we were looking for a building, we looked in Greenville, up and down Concord Pike, and we landed at Augustine Cut off at our building on the outer fringe of the city limits which because of its proximity to Incyte, Salesianum and Abessinio stadium, we benefit from the exposure to approximately 1,800 cars per day traveling past our brick and mortar location.
My proudest moment has to be the ribbon cutting for our new venture in Wilmington with friend Mayor Mike Purzycki in 2019! Being recognized as Makeup Artist of the Year and a Best of Delaware acknowledgment in Delaware Today, too!
I’ve done some volunteer work for Faithful Friends and Humane Animal Partners. Any organization that helps animals is near and dear to my heart. I’m a huge animal lover and will try to do whatever I can to help. The amazing hearts behind it pour so much into it so any opportunity I can get my hands on I’m happy to.
I am most excited about the revitalization of downtown, the POTUS campaign HQ located on Market Street, right here in our hometown of Wilmington, great restaurants, and more. Also, the state created a “film tax credit and a film commission”, so we are positioned perfectly to compete with surrounding states. It would be so cool for our city to be involved in the filming of different big or small movies! I know our salon personally would love to be doing hair and makeup for this!
Looking to the future, the City of Wilmington and New Castle County are in the initial stages for a project that will provide safe and comfortable options for all modes of travel including bicycles and pedestrians for travel and recreational purposes all along Augustine Cut Off. The initial design concept aims to connect the Alapocas run trail to the 18th street connection right past our Beauty Bar & Med Spa location over Brandywine creek, eventually connecting to Lovering Ave. & South Park Drive leading to the Trolley Square area!
My advice for you is to get out and explore, there are connections leading to opportunities waiting to be made everywhere you turn, literally! Don’t miss out on getting in on the ground floor of big things that are happening in our dynamic little city.
