#PeopleOfWilmDE: Jolene Cuisine

Jolene Cuisine is a local drag queen, and is this week’s #PeopleOfWilmDE! Read her story below.

“I was born and raised in Wilmington! While I was in middle and high school I was lucky enough to be immersed in a vibrant theater/arts scene which helped me fall in love with what I do now as a drag queen! I briefly lived out of state following my college years, worked for Disney World, and lived in Orlando. Since I was a kid, I have volunteered for the Wilmington Drama League. Most recently, I was in their December production of “The Wizard of Oz” as Glinda, the Good Witch.

Jolene Cuisine of Wilmington, DEI am one of the regular hosts at Crimson Moon, Wilmington’s only gay bar. When I am not dressing as a woman, I work as a third-party wedding coordinator for Proud to Plan.  We work with amazing Wilmington venues such as Winterthur and Hotel DuPont.

My absolute favorite Wilmington event as a kid was the Ice Cream Festival they did at Rockwood Park, but as an adult, it’s definitely the Italian Festival. My ideal night out in Wilmington would start by grabbing dinner in Trolley Square (Kid Shelleen’s is a personal fave!) and go from there with drinks. Depending on what’s being produced, I often fill my weekend with hitting the lovely theaters in Wilmington to see what’s on stage. Lastly, as a creature of habit, I end my night with a drink and dancing at the Crimson Moon!

I continue to choose Wilmington because, for me, there really is an opportunity for anyone here. Whether a job or a hobby, the phrase ‘A Place To Be Somebody’ really is true! I started performing at the age of 10 here in Wilmington, and that led me to my career as a performer now. I have all of the wonderful theaters and performing venues to thank for molding me into the performer I am today!

I am super excited about all that Crimson Moon puts together every week! We’ve recently recovered from rebuilding due to a fire that left the building unusable. I am so glad to see it back in operation! As the city continues to grow, I would LOVE to see the Wilmington LGBTQ+ community continue to be highlighted and representation strengthened! We’re often considered small but mighty.

My advice to Wilmingtonians is this: Strike up a conversation with someone! Since Delaware is so small, the odds are you will have a mutual friend/connection.”
