Gia Tyler-O'Keefe of Wilmington, DE

“I am originally from northern NJ but moved to Delaware in 2006 for college. I graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in Health and Physical Education. My fitness career started with the Recreation/Fitness Department at UD and shortly after I opened my own CrossFit gym in 2013. I currently live in Cool Spring and work for the Wilmington Fire Department.

I have been focused on running my gym business for the last 8 years with the sole purpose of bettering the community through health and fitness. I hope that my new career as a probationary firefighter will be an extension of that community service. In addition, my family and friends love to support our local businesses (coffee shops, restaurants, art, etc.) and participate in local events/races.

I want to continue experiencing and being an advocate for the growth and success of small businesses in the city. I think we have a unique experience here being a small community. There are a lot of opportunities for people like myself with a dream and some courage. As a professional educator, I really just want to see the children of our community receive a quality education, feel safe, and supported to go after what they want in life.

I choose to live and work in Wilmington because I am a city girl at heart. I love the culture, action, and convenience of living in an urban environment. Everything I enjoy is within walking distance and there is always something to do. I’m new to working for the city but from what I have experienced so far they’re very committed to their employees’ success. I’m looking forward to a long career here.

My proudest moment to date is graduating from the 41st Recruit Academy with the Wilmington Fire Department. It is an honor and privilege to work alongside the other men and women serving this city

My advice to the people working and living in Wilmington is to walk. I think that we are surrounded by so much beauty, history, and culture. Like Ferris Bueller once said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Also, it’s good for you!

Being in Wilmington has helped me be where I am today by giving me an opportunity to better understand the diverse population and how I can be of service and help those around me. I love living here and want it to be a prosperous community for all.”
