#PeopleOfWilmDE: Genevieve Aucoin

Genevieve Aucoin is a Music Therapist and this week’s #PeopleOfWilmDE. Read her story below.

“I was born and raised in Georgia, and never expected to live in Delaware! I ended up moving to the Wilmington area after I completed my music therapy internship in Maryland. The company I was working with had an opening in Delaware around the time I was finishing my internship, and I was excited to accept it. Before I moved here, I didn’t know a single person who lived in DE! But I have grown to love it and make it home, and I am so grateful that I did. I just moved within city limits this summer, and I’m very excited to be closer to the action!

In addition to my music therapy work, I serve on the board of the Wilmington Drama League, and enjoy performing as a theatre artist in my spare time! I have also volunteered at several other theatres in and near Wilmington, such as the Delaware Children’s Theater and Glowing Goose Productions, among others. I have performed with CoroAllegro, a wonderful community chorus that performs both classical and popular music in Wilmington. I have volunteered with The Little Sisters of the Poor in Newark, who do a great service by providing care and housing to older adults who cannot afford care elsewhere. In the past couple years, I have also been involved with The Delaware Coalition for Paid Parental Leave and The Delaware Cares Coalition, which fought to make paid medical and parental leave the law of the land in Delaware.

Three interest facts about me are:

  1. I love to travel, and love to go on weekend getaways! My partner and I often visit NYC to see shows on Broadway, and we recently took a New England road trip.
  2. French was my second major in college, and I studied abroad in Tours, France for a semester.
  3. I have two sweet kitties, Dixie Mae & June. They love looking out the window and watching the people of Wilmington go about their day!

My favorite place to be in Wilmington is the Wilmington Drama League. Not only do they put on high quality performances, but they also offer a great deal of educational programming and community outreach. WDL also strives to honor diverse stories and perspectives through our programming. There is something for everyone at WDL, which is why I continue to be involved there.

My perfect night out in Wilmington would start with beautiful weather and a leisurely walk somewhere like Brandywine Park, Cool Spring Park, or the Riverfront (basically anywhere with a water feature!) We love grabbing tacos at Taco Grande on the Riverfront, so our night would definitely include a stop there. Then we would catch a show at one of the many local theatres, and end the night with cocktails at a unique spot like Hummingbird to Mars Speakeasy in Trolley Square or Liquid Alchemy Meadery

I continue to choose Wilmington because it is a highly underrated place to live! It offers plenty to do, while also providing a more peaceful environment than many other big cities. At the same time, it is within convenient driving distance of Philly, NYC, Baltimore, D.C., the Jersey Shore, and a number of other exciting places to visit. I have felt so free to travel and explore since moving here! Wilmington also feels much more close-knit than anywhere else I have ever lived, which is definitely a plus for a social butterfly like me! I feel well-connected to the city and its people.

What would I like to see the city grow? There are so many things that come to mind when answering this question. When you love a place, you want it to be the best that it can be! I think that a greater number of mental health services are needed in our area. As a creative arts therapist, my wheels are always turning as to how we can best address this, especially in non-traditional ways that are more accessible to the people who need them.”
