#PeopleOfWilmDE: Chris Boozer

Chris Boozer is the owner and founder of Trash Porters and is this week’s #PeopleOfWilmDE. Read his story below.

“I was born and raised in West Philadelphia. As a youth, I was easily distracted by my surroundings, which led me to be under state supervision for over two decades. In 2020 I lost my best friend to suicide and it hit me hard! I knew I needed a fresh start for my family. I would no longer allow my past actions to dictate my future. Delaware was perfect for me. Close enough to my mother in Philly and a great place to raise my children. Delaware has plenty of opportunities along with great people.

Three interesting facts about me:

  1. I’m originally from West Philadelphia.
  2. I am an advocate for reform.
  3. I love to Talk Trash!

I love to start my Fridays off with avocado toast and juice from The Juice Joint 2.0 before we start our residential garbage collection. Oath 84 is a great spot on Fridays for me to network and talk trash! I have been wanting to get down to Keem’s Restaurant, their food looks so good and I hear great things about them.

Wilmington gave me my second chance at life without Wilmington even knowing it. I have received great help from different organizations, and businesses. I have formed some great friendships along the way. I would not be where I am today without the support of Wilmington.

Wilmington has been great to me! It’s a welcoming place, which was an unfamiliar feeling. I consider many of our local organizations as my family including The Pete Dupont Foundation, New Castle County Chambers, The Launcher program, Wilmington Alliance, Delaware Black Chambers of Commerce, and my office which is located in the CSC Station. I couldn’t imagine leaving! I live in Wilmington and truly believe Wilmington has great resources, opportunities, and people. I love it here!

Winning NCCC Swim with the Sharks competition will always be one of my proudest moments personally and professionally. Without that competition, I would not have been able to buy our first dump truck. And The Trash Porters would not be where we are today. I am definitely looking forward to attending this year. Graduating the Launcher program helped me overcome some of my personal insecurities and barriers. And, I can’t forget getting my Delaware ID making me an official Wilmingtonian! These are all proud moments of mine.

I’m excited to see the growth of The Trash Porters. I believe that senior citizens, the disabled, single mothers, and all residents deserve our service especially if they reside in a multi-unit residence. We are here to ensure apartment residents don’t have the burden of taking the trash down flights of stairs and carrying it 300ft to an overflowing dumpster area. I believe in the next 5 years The Trash Porters will be a household name providing our innovative Trash Valet services.

We donate gently used furniture that we acquire on pickups to various organizations, one being One Step at a Time Foundation. Additionally, in partnership with The Wilmington Job Corps, we employ young entrepreneurs. We just adopted our first highway in New Castle County helping keep our community clean. We donated equipment to Howard High School for our young entrepreneurs to learn the craft of t-shirt printing. I also have spoken to our young entrepreneurs at Howard High and Wilmington Job Corps on entrepreneurship.

Lastly, I would like to see more formally incarcerated individuals receive the help they need to overcome their past wrongdoings and have a positive impact on our community. Maybe a reform certification for formerly incarcerated individuals through the Office of Supplier Diversity.

I’m thankful to everyone in Wilmington for being such great people. Thank you to everyone who has supported me and this journey. Thank You to all my fellow entrepreneurs who continually motivate me. Never let your past dictate your future. Opportunity lives here if you go out and get it! LETS GO!!”
