#PeopleOfWilmDE: 7GOD

7GOD is a Visual artist, Poet, Designer, Mental health advocate, and Curator here in Wilmington. He is this week’s #PeopleOfWilmDE. Read his story below:

“I was born and raised in Wilmington, and have created and designed for over 5 years.

Three interesting facts about me are:

  1. I learned to become an entrepreneur at the age of 9, starting with selling water, incense, and oils.
  2. I am a self taught artist and have been practicing visual art for less than 5 years.
  3. I am a big fan of Jazz and Old School R&B music.
7GOD of Wilmington, DE

I continue to choose Wilmington to work and live because I feel an energy and connection to see and be part of the change and to change the narrative of what my city has to offer. I also want to continue the legacy of Clifford Brown and one day I want to have a statue of my own to add to the rich history of Wilmington, DE.

To be honest, a perfect night out for me in Wilmington is working in my studio, and if myself or my creative cool friends put an event together I will be there to support!

I, as well as other local artists, are creating new opportunities that challenge what Wilmington looks like to truly support and sustain local artists as well as working to bring more cultural events to the city.

I’d love to see our city grow through people of color owning more spaces and buildings. The biggest thing for me is to have generational wealth for my community. I want to see the city create more space for thriving and living artists.

My advice to people living and working in Wilmington is to start cultivating the change you wish to see in your city, then start with yourself first. For example if you love art, create a group following for artists and share resources or create a gallery space!

A proud moment of mine while being in the city was opening up the ‘Buy My Art Before I Die Affirmation Room’ at the Delaware Contemporary that has been on view for over 8 months.

I am excited to be part of the shift within the creative community. My creative business partner Shakira Hunt and I are putting in a lot of work to actively create the change we want for our city, shifting the communities through our wellness programming, and relating it all back to art and culture.”
