Mayor Purzycki Invites You to the 16th Annual Wilmington Grand Prix Weekend, May 17-19, 2024

Mayor Mike Purzycki is excited to welcome residents and visitors to the 16th Annual Wilmington Grand Prix, happening from Friday, May 17 through Sunday, May 19. This premier criterium-style bike race, part of USA Cycling’s National Race Calendar, attracts riders from across the nation and around the world, generating excitement and economic activity in the city since 2012. Last year’s race drew riders from 17 states and five countries. “We are thrilled to welcome the Wilmington Grand Prix back to our City,” said Mayor Purzycki, “This highly anticipated event has generated much excitement and increased economic activity citywide since 2012.”

Bank of America will serve as the presenting sponsor. Chip Rossi, Bank of America Delaware President stated, “We believe in the power of events like the Grand Prix to bring people together and showcase the best of what our city has to offer, and we wish all participants and organizers a successful and enjoyable race weekend.”

Event Highlights

Friday, May 17

The festivities begin at 5:00 p.m. with the Monkey Hill Time Trial in Brandywine Park. This 3.2-mile race against the clock concludes with the challenging climb up Monkey Hill. The event supports the Urban Bike Project and features live music by What the Funk, craft beer, food trucks, and more.

Saturday, May 18

The action moves downtown with the Major Taylor Community Ride at 11:30 a.m. This free ride celebrates bicycling’s inclusiveness and is open to all ability levels. Participants can ride the same course as professional racers, with family-friendly laps and pro announcers recognizing participating groups. The ride is named after Major Taylor, whose legacy inspires cycling clubs nationwide.

The day continues with a free street festival from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., featuring course cafes, vendors, and family-friendly activities. The Men’s and Women’s Pro races and two amateur races will take place downtown, adding to the excitement.

Sunday, May 19

The weekend wraps up with the 12th Annual Governor’s Ride and the 11th Annual Delaware Gran Fondo. Starting at 8:00 a.m. in Rockford Park, these events take cyclists through the scenic Brandywine Valley, visiting cultural landmarks such as Winterthur, Hagley, Auburn Heights, covered bridges, and the Delaware Museum of Science and Nature. Cyclists from across the U.S. and several countries will join, making it a truly international event.
