Renowned Iron Man Mike Clark probably wouldn’t have given a second thought to the near 100 degree temperatures in Wilmington on Saturday when hundreds of his friends participated in the 9th annual Mike Clark Memorial Ride to honor the competitive spirit of late Delaware Sports Hall of Famer. With a career filled with award-winning marathons, triathlons and worldwide Iron Man competitions, Clark was a legend with a bounty of friends who also gave generously of his time to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware. When Clark died suddenly in 2008, his friends — many of whom also participated in Iron Man competitions around the globe with Clark — established the Mike Clark Legacy Foundation to raise funds for BGCDE.

This year’s race again began at A.I. Dupont High School, where peddlers began either the 50 or 100-mile challenge. The well-supported race included a picnic lunch catered by Moveable Feast and an after party at the BBC Tavern & Grill. In the nine years they have hosted the Ride, MCLR organizers have raised $150,000 for the BGCDE. And they also host several other events throughout the year for BGCDE — all in Mike’s memory. “We want to make sure his legacy continues,” said Karim Abubakar, chair of the Mike Clark Legacy Ride. “Mike felt strongly that working with kids was so important. He had so much more to give. “
