On Friday, April 19, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the Department of Public Works is hosting a free event at Cool Spring Reservoir Plaza, situated at 11th and Franklin streets. This family-friendly event will focus on the theme “Planet VS. Plastics.” Attendees can enjoy a musical performance featuring DJ Tim Dogg, along with an original Earth Day rap by the Cultural Restoration Project, Inc. and 4th grade students from Kuumba Academy Charter School. With over two dozen partners and vendors participating, the event promises a day filled with educational and entertaining activities.

Make a Difference on Community Clean-Up Day

Following the celebration, on Saturday, April 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Mayor Purzycki encourages everyone to take part in the citywide Community Clean-Up Day. This initiative, part of the Beautiful City campaign launched in 2017, aims to unite the community in beautifying Wilmington. By participating, you’ll be contributing to the well-being of the city’s neighborhoods and public spaces, showcasing a collective respect and pride for our community.

“City neighborhoods and public spaces are Wilmington’s greatest assets,” said Mayor Purzycki, “and keeping them clean and attractive is a sign of respect for City residents and where they live. I look forward to this day each year when people come together to demonstrate their community pride by producing a cleaner and more beautiful City. The continued pairing of our Community Clean-Up Day with the celebration of Earth Day and Arbor Day makes perfect sense given that appreciation for our individual neighborhoods and for the planet that holds us together often go hand-in-hand.”

How to Get Involved

Interested parties, including neighborhood groups, churches, businesses, and schools, are urged to participate. Projects can range from trash collection and landscaping to planting flowers and starting community gardens. Register online or email communitycleanupday@WilmingtonDE.gov by April 15. The City will support registered groups with necessary supplies, including trash bags, gloves, and trash pickers. For more information, residents can call 3-1-1 within city limits.

Share Your Success

Participants are encouraged to use the hashtag #BeautifulWilmDE to share before and after photos of their clean-up efforts on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. This is a chance to not only showcase your hard work but also to inspire others to join in the effort to beautify Wilmington.

Don’t miss out on these opportunities to celebrate our planet and contribute to the community’s betterment. Let’s come together to make Wilmington a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful city.
