“You can’t get ahead without giving back.” Wilmington Local Is A Volunteering Super-Star

While Wilmington is filled with many amazing people, some go above and beyond the call of duty to change lives. Meet Charma Bell. From a young age, she was taught to put others first. Her life has led her to be the Program Director at The First Tee which provided personal development and golfing opportunities over 15,000 students this past year. Because of her devotion to helping others, Bell has won the Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcaster Association Herm Reitzes Award for community service.

Summarized from the article “Volunteering, giving back to Delaware engrained in Bell” from Deleware Online.

Volunteering has been a part of Charma Bell’s life since she was a young child growing up in Delaware during the late 1960s.

Her mother, Mae Caldwell, instilled the importance of giving back and helping others. Bell can still remember when her family passed out flyers during Joe Biden’s campaign to win a seat in the Senate all those years ago. That snowballed to volunteering at church and at the Christina Cultural Arts Center.

Since 1994, Bell has been involved with the LPGA Urban Youth Golf Program of Wilmington, now known as The First Tee of Delaware, which is a youth development program teaching life skills and golf to students throughout the state.

Currently, she serves as the Program Director at The First Tee where Bell oversees and provides guidance and support for the organization’s programs. In the past year, they have reached more than 15,000 students across the state, growing from 50 students the program initially had in 1994.
