More than a year after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Wilmington Blue Rocks returned to Judy Johnson Field at Frawley Stadium for their season opener against the Aberdeen IronBirds. Attendance was capped at 25% with face masks and social distancing mandated for spectators. Despite losing to the IronBirds 10-1, the Blue Rocks and their fans remained enthusiastic, eager for the season, and thankful to be back at Frawley after a 601-day hiatus.
The Blue Rocks, an affiliate of the Washington Nationals, and previously the Kansas City Royals, return for their first season after winning the 2019 MiLB Carolina League Championship
“I’m extremely excited to see Blue Rocks minor league baseball return to Wilmington’s Riverfront under manager Tommy Shields,” said Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki. “It has been a long nineteen months since we last saw the Blue Rocks in action and celebrated together the team’s 2019 Carolina League title. The Blue Rocks returning to the field is just one more sign that we are beginning to turn the corner on this pandemic. I remain confident, that with everyone’s continued cooperation and vigilance, we will soon achieve a new measure of normal, that the City will emerge even stronger than before.”
