The inaugural Wilmington Black Restaurant Week (BRW), hosted by the Wilmington City Council in collaboration with the Office of Economic Development, is set to celebrate the vibrant tapestry of Black culinary culture while extending a helping hand to our beloved local Wilmington restaurants.
Join us during Wilmington’s Black Restaurant Week to savor the distinctive and delectable offerings of African American, African, and Caribbean cuisines as we come together as a community. Few things unite a community quite like the shared delight of exceptional cuisine. Mark your calendars for Wilmington’s BRW, scheduled from September 17 to September 24, coinciding with Wilmington HBCU Week 2023.

Wilmington’s Black Restaurant Week kicks off with “A Taste of Wilmington.”
Saturday, September 16, 2023
1 pm – 4 pm
Free & Open to the Public
The Baby Grand
818 Market Street
Wilmington, Delaware
Upon your arrival at The Baby Grand‘s lobby, you will be warmly welcomed by seven accomplished Black-owned restaurateurs, each offering a diverse array of delectable cuisine available for purchase. Prepare to embark on a journey that tantalizes both your taste buds and your intellect through “Foodways & Folklore: A Community Conversation.” This engaging discussion will be led by the nationally renowned storyteller and folklorist, Queen Nur, alongside a distinguished panel of Black Culinary Artists who will delve into the intricate relationship between cuisine and culture. The panel discussion is scheduled to run from 3 pm to 4 pm.
This exceptional event has been made possible, in part, thanks to the generous support of a grant from the Delaware Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Indeed, democracy thrives on wisdom.
This pre-event for Black Restaurant Week is being held in collaboration with “Soul of the City,” presented by the Christina Cultural Arts Center and co-hosted by The Grand Opera House. “Soul of the City” is a dynamic downtown “block party” where Market Street, spanning from 7th to 9th Streets, will be transformed into a hub of family-friendly activities. This year’s “Soul of the City” festival is dedicated to celebrating the distinctive contributions of Wilmington’s vibrant arts organizations and communities while also commemorating the monumental 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop.
The Passport for this event has more details to come.
