J’nay Spady also known as “Lefty The Greatest” is a performer in this year’s Ladybug Festival, as well as this week’s #PeopleofWilmDE! Read her story below:
“I was born and raised in Wilmington. I went to Delcastle High School and Cab Calloway for middle school. My first job was as a camp counselor. I used to watch kids and supervise them on field trips. I was even paid to perform music here when I was just a teenager. I’ve had a lot of good times here in Wilmington. I have met some incredible people here. Mostly everyone I love lives in Wilmington.
My start in music also started here in Wilmington. I am a rapper and songwriter. I have performed all over Wilmington, including the Ladybug Festival! I also work for the State of Delaware, where we have been working to provide meals for the homeless who have suffered through the pandemic. I hope to continue to help others and spread art! I was always able to stay employed here with great jobs. I have made business connections and am able to work on my music and art here because of the loving community.
I love our art community here. I remember when I got to perform and feature my artwork at Artscape right on N. Market Street, check them out! That was a great day! I also loved performing for Ladybug, it was a fun memory. It was great to get out there and empower women and our city through music.
One of the concerns I have about getting back out into the community is health for sure. I look forward to everyone reconnecting again as things open back up, as I have been missing a lot of people.
The advice I would give to someone in Wilmington is to give it a chance! There are incredible and supportive people here that anyone would love to know. Explore and make connections with others!”
