Taylor Drainer is a Communications Professional, is the current President of the Junior League of Wilmington, and is this week’s #PeopleofWilmDE! Read her story below.

“I grew up in Newark, Delaware. After college, I moved back home and met my now husband who grew up in Wilmington. When we decided to move in together, we knew that the Riverfront is where we wanted to live. We enjoyed living at the Riverfront for a year before we bought our home about 10 minutes outside of Wilmington in Claymont.

Three fun facts about me are:

1. I danced ballet, tap, and jazz from age 4 to 18.
2. My first job was at age 12 as a dog walker.
3. I studied abroad in Rome, Italy for a month.

My ideal night out in Wilmington starts in Trolley Square at the Crow Bar for dinner. Followed by Anejo Tequila Bar for jumbo margaritas – specifically jalapeno ones! In the Summertime, Docklands is a great place to dance and hang out under the clear sky listening to the DJs and bands. My favorite Wilmington event is the Flower Market (though it seems to rain most of the time). It is a great event for all ages and for me – marks the start of Summer. I love attending the Market with my husband.

I continue to choose Wilmington to work in because the businesses here have proven that Wilmington is a great place to work. They are dedicated to helping build the community around their business and I want to continue to be a part of the city’s growth. As part of the Junior League of Wilmington, I have become a better-trained volunteer, as well as sharpened my skill set in communications/marketing and leadership. The League has allowed me to get out of my comfort zone and become a period equity advocate and help make impactful change in Wilmington. I was able to strengthen my skills in my field which led to me being hired in my previous and current roles.

My proudest moment as a Wilmingtonian has been all of the work the Junior League of Wilmington is doing. Our Stand Up. Period. focus is currently providing 900+ members of the community with period supplies through distributions to our community partners, and at events in Wilmington. I am so proud of our members’ passion and dedication as they work towards achieving period equity in our city and educating the public about menstruation.

I am excited about the restaurants opening all around Wilmington. The city is becoming so vibrant with many places to eat, hang out and connect with family and friends – it is amazing. As we continue to grow, I would like the city of Wilmington and businesses to provide free period supplies in public spaces. I would also like to continue to see neighborhoods that have suffered for decades be given opportunities to flourish and become the communities that their residents need and can love.

My advice to Wilmingtonians is: Give Wilmington a chance. It is a great place to live, work and play. There is so much history, community and potential in this city. Wilmington can continue to become a thriving area as long as there are people to love and nourish it by building communities and supporting Wilmington businesses.”
