Shakira Hunt is a Branding Lifestyle Photographer, Creative Director, Designer, and Curator here in Wilmington. She is this week’s #PeopleOfWilmDE. Read her story below:

“I was born and raised in Wilmington. I went to DCAD for 2 years and moved to Philly to attend the MOORE College of Art and Design. I then worked for architecture and design firms based in Wilmington, all before taking the leap of faith for full time entrepreneurship! I have been living and operating in Wilmington for the last 4 years.

One of my proudest moments of being a Wilmingtonian was creating my first photography exhibition highlighting local creatives and artists!

Shakira Hunt of Wilmington, DE.

Growing up Downtown in the heart of Wilmington and participating in youth groups, outdoor experiences, and community centers such as William “Hicks” Anderson Center really nurtured my connection to our underserved communities. These spaces aren’t recognized for the incredible talent they produce. Being a pillar in these same communities keeps my desire for change a priority.

Three interesting facts about me are:

  1. I’m half Bermudian.
  2. I’m obsessed with my dog Ginger!
  3. I created an amazing body of work titled ‘Give Me My Flowers’ which was hosted as my first solo exhibition within 1 year of creating it at the Delaware Contemporary.

I would select the Art Loop as my favorite event in the city because of the exposure and visibility local artists can have. However, I, as well as other local artists, are creating new opportunities that challenge what this experience looks like in order to truly support and sustain local artists.

An ideal night out would be wine at Le Cavalier or Bardea to be honest, and if myself or my creative cool friends put an event together I will be there supporting.

I continue to choose Wilmington because this is the place I call home, and have always felt connected here. I want to be a part of the change and shift that is happening and should happen for our city to thrive.

Cultivating community and supporting those around me has always been my biggest priority as an entrepreneur. Knowing and leveraging the resources I have to be a connector in a small city (like Wilmington) is important to me.

I am excited to be part of the shift within the creative community. My creative business partner 7God and I are putting in a lot of work to actively create the change we want for our city. This includes shifting communities through our wellness programming, and relating it all back to art and culture.

I want to see the city create more space for thriving and living artists. A piece of advice I’d give people working and living in Wilmington is to support your creative community and small biz folks!”
