Nery Burgos is Owner, Chef, and Hospitality Director of Breakfast at Blume and is a Wilmington native. Read her story below as this week’s #PeopleOfWilmDE!
“My mother came from Cuba in the 80’s [and] married my father, who is Puerto Rican. They moved to Delaware for work and I was born here.
Here are 3 interesting facts about me:

- I am a mother of four beautiful children.
- I am a first generation American.
- My first language is Spanish.
[My favorite attraction in Wilmington is the] Dupont Nemours Garden. [For a night out in Wilmington, I would] choose Bardea. I love opulent dinner and drink [because] I am a chef, so [this] is my first [choice].
[I choose to continue to live and work in Wilmington because] it’s home; I know this place like the back of my hand. Wilmington is small but big enough to grow past your wildest imagination. Wilmington has a small city charm with endless possibility. [I’m really excited about] the redevelopment of the Wilmington Riverfront. I would like small businesses to have more access to funds in local banks. Also 30% of new businesses and employees should have business training for free and hire kids.
[My advice for the people of Wilmington is to] make Wilmington your home. When you look at it as your home, you take care of it.
[My proudest moment in Wilmington] would have to be personal. As [a] single mother, [I] raised four children. I overcame a lot of hard times and still was able to start my [business].
With every breath I take, I know God is with me, and that’s a story of adversity [met with] discipline.”
