The city’s corporate and nonprofit sectors are looking to establish Wilmington as a financial tech capital. The latest example, OpenBracket Delaware is a coding competition with $50,000 in cash prizes.

On Nov. 5, at The Grand Opera House in Wilmington. 100 finalists from an online competition will square off in a team environment for the chance to win a $15,000 grand prize, in an event that Technical.ly is helping to produce.

This competition is being spearheaded by Ben duPont, the Wilmington-based angel investor and cofounder of Zip Code Wilmington. In an interview with Delaware Online Mr. duPont said, “The idea is to make it part coding competition and part rock concert that’s also a fun event to watch and be a part of. We want to attract skilled programmers and higher-end thought leaders from around the country.”

His initiatives are looking to attract and convince top software developers to stay in Delaware.

This event is largely being sponsored by a collection of notable local corporations. With the title sponsor being Chatham Financial, others include; Christiana CareCapital OneWSFSM&T Bank and JPMorgan Chase.

Events like the coding competition are looking to evolve the branding of Wilmington as a desirable place for the tech savvy to work and live. Companies are seeing the value in sponsoring events like these, in order to recruit talent and compete in the competitive hiring landscape.
