Introducing Safe Syringe Disposal Option at Police Headquarters

Mayor Mike Purzycki, in conjunction with Police Chief Wilfredo Campos, is pleased to announce the recent installation of a secure syringe disposal box in the public lobby of the Wilmington Police Department headquarters, located at 300 North Walnut Street.

This significant addition, now available to residents, is aimed at providing a safe and convenient means of disposing of syringes and sharps, complementing the already-existing prescription drug drop box.

The establishment of this syringe disposal box is a result of the collaborative efforts of the State of Delaware’s DHSS Office of Health Crisis Response and Choice MedWaste. Choice MedWaste has undertaken the responsibility of maintaining and routinely inspecting and emptying the disposal box.

Police Chief Wilfredo Campos stated, “Our commitment to supporting the community goes beyond traditional law enforcement duties. We are continuously exploring innovative ways to enhance the well-being of our residents, and this safe syringe disposal box is a testament to that dedication. We extend our gratitude to the Office of Health Crisis Response and our esteemed partners for making this resource available to our community.”

In addition to this new syringe disposal resource, the Wilmington Police Department has long provided a prescription drug drop box within the public lobby, offering a secure solution for disposing of unused or expired prescription medications.

Mayor Mike Purzycki expressed his appreciation for Chief Campos and his team for spearheading this important community initiative, saying, “The Wilmington Police Department exemplifies our commitment to the welfare of our community. Our dedicated officers consistently seek out novel approaches to engage and support our residents. Collaborating with our valued partners in the social service, public health, and community service sectors, the WPD strives to address the pressing needs of our city’s residents, fostering trust within our community.”
