DuPont Performance Building Solutions Receives American Chemistry Council Award

DuPont Styrofoam™ Brand ST-100 Extruded Polystyrene Foam was honored with the 2023 ACC Sustainability Leadership Award this summer. This recognition by the American Chemistry Council (ACC) highlights the significant contributions of companies that have implemented successful sustainability initiatives. The ACC meticulously reviewed the winning entries internally, and an independent panel of esteemed sustainability experts also evaluated them.

Dr. Shawn Hunter, DuPont Global Sustainability Director

Shawn Hunter, the Global Sustainability Director of DuPont Performance Building Solutions and Corian® Design, expressed gratitude for the recognition. He emphasized the company’s dedication to creating products that drive the reduction of whole-life carbon emissions in buildings to zero. Hunter further acknowledged the collective efforts of individuals across the business. DuPont remains committed to innovation, recognizing that their future is closely intertwined with climate action.

Building upon an 80-year legacy of Styrofoam™ Brand XPS products, the new insulation addresses demands for low-embodied carbon products. This innovative product achieved an impressive 94% reduction in embodied carbon throughout its life cycle. It continued to deliver the same operational carbon savings through stable, long-term insulation value for both new and retrofitted buildings. This aligns with DuPont’s commitment to reduce GHG emissions while fostering sustainable innovation.

For over a decade, XPS insulation products relied on hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) agents to achieve properties like thermal insulation. However, many HFCs are potent greenhouse gasses due to their relatively high intrinsic Global Warming Potentials (GWPs). To address this challenge, DuPont innovators then took on the climate action challenge and reinvented Styrofoam™ Brand Insulation. They developed an optimized HFO-based, low-GWP blowing agent formulation that not only achieved a significant reduction in GHG emissions across the product life cycle but also maintained crucial product properties like mechanical strength, R-value, and moisture and fire resistance. The success of Styrofoam™ Brand ST-100 XPS Insulation is evident in achieving the maximum points possible under the Embodied Carbon/LCA Optimization credit within the LEED Green Building certification scheme.

The latest award-winning innovation from DuPont, along with their previous accolade for Froth-Pak™ Spray Foam, aligns with the company’s “Acting on Climate” goal. This goal aims to achieve a 75% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions from operations by 2030. The Science-Based Targets initiative validated DuPont’s updated “Acting on Climate” goal, further solidifying their commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

The ACC, representing diverse companies in the field of chemistry, established the Sustainability Leadership Awards in 2019 to recognize outstanding achievements in priority areas covered by ACC’s Sustainability Principles, including product safety, innovation and transparency, environmental protection, circularity, and societal contributions. Their mission revolves around tackling significant challenges facing the nation and the world, delivering value to members through engagement, political advocacy, communications, and scientific research.
