Delaware Provides 14th Best Mental Health Care in US

Mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation are exponentially increasing in the United States. A team of analysts from QuoteWizard examined factors relating to mental health care, then determined their effect on its quality. Fortunately, they found that Delaware has the 14th best mental healthcare in the U.S.

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month in May, analysts examined five factors to determine the strength of mental healthcare in each state. These were:

  • prevalence of mental illness in each state
  • access to mental health care
  • percent of those with a mental illness not receiving care
  • percent of those with a mental illness
  • mental illness and health insurance

A combination of factors proved to be the biggest weakness in the systems: mental illness combined with an inability to be treated or insufficient treatment. Over 50% of adults in the US receive no treatment for their mental illness, while 28% do not receive enough. At the very worst, this lack of treatment can result in suicide, the rates of which have gone up by 30% since 1999.

Findings from the study indicated that insurance was a major factor which determined reception of necessary mental health care. There is a direct correlation between the number of people who don’t receive mental health care and that of the people who have a mental illness but no insurance.

Specifically pertaining to Delaware, the study found that 21% of residents have a mental illness. A bit concerning, 48% of Delaware residents with mental illness are not receiving care. However, only 8% of residents with mental illness are without insurance. These numbers suggest that the near half of Delaware residents with a mental illness who are not receiving care could be attributed to factors other than a lack of insurance.
