ChristianaCare Honored for Outstanding Surgical Outcomes

Wilmington, Del. – January 29, 2024

In a testament to its unwavering commitment to excellence in surgical patient care, ChristianaCare has once again received prestigious recognition from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Clinical Congress. Out of 615 institutions evaluated, ChristianaCare stands among the select 78 institutions acknowledged for achieving “meritorious” outcomes.

This marks the remarkable tenth occasion that ChristianaCare has been lauded through the ACS National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP), the gold standard in assessing and enhancing surgical care quality on a national scale.

Dr. Matthew Rubino, MD, MBA, FACS, interim chair of ChristianaCare’s Department of Surgery, emphasized, “Patients entrusting their care to ChristianaCare can rest assured that they are in the hands of a team consistently recognized on a national level for delivering exceptional quality and safety in surgical interventions. This recognition underscores our enduring dedication to providing top-tier surgical care to our community, guided by our core values of love and excellence.”

The accolade acknowledges ChristianaCare’s holistic approach to preoperative care across various specialties, including general, colorectal, neurologic, orthopedic, and oral and maxillofacial and otorhinolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat) surgery. Encompassing Christiana Hospital, Wilmington Hospital, and the Christiana Surgicenter in Newark, Delaware, this recognition reflects nearly 38,000 surgical procedures annually, ranking ChristianaCare’s surgical volume as the 46th highest nationwide.

The ACS NSQIP evaluates surgical outcomes within 30 days post-operation, employing risk adjustments to ensure fair assessments across diverse patient populations and acuity levels. Participating hospitals rigorously track and analyze inpatient and outpatient surgical results, thereby driving ongoing patient safety initiatives and elevating the standard of surgical care.

ChristianaCare’s recognition by ACS NSQIP spans eight clinical areas:
  1. Mortality.
  2. Cardiac arrest and heart attack.
  3. Pneumonia.
  4. Unplanned intubation.
  5. Ventilator use exceeding 48 hours.
  6. Renal failure.
  7. Surgical site infections.
  8. Urinary tract infections.
