Census Day 2020 – Why Being Counted Matters

It’s April 1st! Happy Census Day!

Today is a very important day for residents in Wilmington! — There are $3Billion dollars in city and state funding at stake based on the Census results. Today is the day to ensure that every resident is accounted for. Here’s why the census is such an instrumental component to our democracy!

it's census day - today is the day to say "I COUNT" and be counted in the 2020 census

Shape A Healthy Future for Wilmington

For those political science buffs, this may be something you already know — but the average American probably doesn’t know that Article 1, Section 2 of the United States Constitution outlines that there should be a population count of our country every 10 years. The data collected by the census are used in ways that you may not know about and impact every Wilmingtonian!

Locally, the data collected can impact and determine needs for Wilmington’s roads, schools, rural development, child-care, senior centers, housing, incarceration, health care and more. On a State and Federal level, census data determines the federal dollars allocated to states from all national programs over 10 years.

Millions and Billions in Community Funding

Here’s why it matters — the more people that are counted means more money and support for our communities in Wilmington and Delaware — up to $3 billion dollars in funding for programs such as:

  • Medicare and Medicaid
  • Head Start
  • Pell Grants and Student Loans
  • SNAP and WIC Benefits
  • Low Income Home Energy Assistance
  • Program (LIHEAP)
  • School Free Breakfast and Lunch
  • State Children’s Health Insurance
  • Programs (CHIP)
  • Section 8 Vouchers
  • Senior Centers
  • Purchase of Care
  • Special Education Services and English
  • as a Second Language Services
  • After-School Programs

Historically, census data has missed disproportionate numbers of racial minorities, immigrants, young children and those living in poverty “hard-to-count populations”. That’s why it’s so important that you get counted, that your family gets counted!

In an effort to reach the “hard-to-count” populations, the census can be completed online! Here’s how:
