The Brandywine Festival of the Arts is an end of summer bash that marks the end of long, hot summer days, and the beginning of the cool, crisp excitement the season of fall brings. But, the 2-day festival marks more than just the change of seasons. The BFA also marks a Wilmington tradition of music, art, food, and family fun and it’s now over 50 years old! It began in 1961 with artists displaying two-dimensional art on clotheslines and snow fences and a bull roast. Over the years the art festival has evolved along with its popularity and now boasts participants, artists, and musicians alike from over 30 states from as far as California. The Brandywine Festival of the Arts is still celebrated in Brandywine Park, its original location, and continues to take place every year on the weekend after Labor Day.
The Brandywine Festival is known across the region, nationally recognized, and perennially ranks in the top 100 shows in the country. These days around 20,000 people come to Brandywine Park’s Josephine Garden, with 250 exhibiting artists, a wide range of live music, lots of great food, family fun and activities, yoga each morning in the “Music Meadow”, a pet adoption area sponsored by the Delaware Humane Association, a $1 admission to the Brandywine Zoo during the festival. There will also be plenty of artists creating their works live to see their talents, up-close and personal. (Get your time lapses ready!)
