ADVISORY:

Mayor, Jefferson Awards Foundation to celebrate donation of art kits to help local children cope with crisis situations

WHAT: The Wilmington Police Department, the YWCA Home Life Management Center and Exceptional Care for Children will accept the donation of approximately 450 art kits to distribute to local children who are in crisis, transition or need. The kits, which mean to encourage recipients to explore their feelings and find a respite from the difficulties they’re experiencing, were assembled and donated thanks to the Wilmington’s activation of the nationwide Emma’s Art Kits initiative of the Jefferson Foundation Awards.

Mayor Michael Purzycki will discuss the project’s impact and celebrate the contributions of time, art supplies and written words of support that the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs, Bank of America, Delaware College of Art and Design and the Delaware 87ers made in assembling the kits during the packing days each entity conducted.

WHEN: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2018

WHERE: Delaware College of Art and Design, 600 N. Market St., Wilmington

DETAILS: Emma’s Art Kits is the national 2017 Jefferson Awards Foundation’s LEAD 360 Big Ideas Project. The annual youth service competition engages young people across the country and recognizes projects at the local, regional and national level. Emma’s Art Kits creator Emma Stumpf was diagnosed with a brain tumor at age seven and used art projects to cope with the many surgeries and chemotherapy and radiation treatments she had to endure.

In addition to the mayor, among those offering remarks will be JAF national director Michele Fidance, DCAD President John Hawkins, Tonya R. Richardson of the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs and representatives from the initiative’s other partners.
